Red for Heart Health Awareness

We've gone all out red for this weekend, in support of Women's Health and Heart health in particular.

The shop is back on track after a week of unavoidable delays, and we're even more determined to keep it happening in Ballarat.

We now have Donna working a couple of days a week while I concentrate on collecting more great bits for the shop, plus work at the Ballarat Mill Markets.

Opening times for WINTER are Tuesday to Saturday 10-5
The Mill Markets are open everyday 10-6

Exhibitions will now also be featured at the Mill Markets, as well as at Dear Prudence, and we're very excited to be included in the TRIIIKE TRAIL which will offer art for sale around town!

Dates for the next exhibitions will be finalized soon, and we'll be sending out invites, and a BIG WINTER SALE is under way for selected stock - well worth coming in to see what sort of stuff is on offer at the moment!

Evie's show moved forward.....!!!!

Last nights exhibition was unfortunately not possible, and has been moved forward to this Friday 28th May.

The pictures are hung, the prices and titles have been sorted and Evie is counting down to the new Opening!!

The overall display is amazing, with a stream of admirers having an early viewing today, and some really positive and encouraging feedback.

The following is a blurb supplied for the show.............

So, Evie Cahir is completing her final year at Ballarat Grammar, where she juggles literature and various folios (painting and drawing, visial communication and design technology)

Since she was physically capable, she has drawn things that inspire her-such as headdresses, crooked teeth, lopsided haircuts, lemon meringue and Alice Munro.

Watercolours, inks, pencil, pastel and acrylic paint is used to create simple, eclectic and 'scrappy' artwork. The works of artists such as Mel Stringer, Alex Watson, Matisse, Kat Macleod, Cibella Court and Sarah Mcneil are the usual sources of inspiration...................

Those who have helped, tutored and taught are also influential, for example - Maggi Dannet (age 9-11)

Steve Morvell (11-13) Diane Jacono (13-14) pottery classes with Dawn Whitehand and Helen Lewis and workshops with Ann James.

Awards received in the past include 'Best Junior Art Award' at Trentham art show, 'Best Young Artist' at Steve Morvell's studio...........

Evie is also currently the recipient of an Art Scholarship at Ballarat Grammar.....

Evie looks forward to illustrating, designing and scribbling for a living.....

Tomorrow night is the Opening of an Exhibition by Evie Cahir, and I can't wait to finish hanging this cool collection of watercolours and illustrations which uses a twist of unusual materials including brown paper bags and old handwritten recipe pages, with an ecclectic mix of framing techniques.

Its a big deal to have your work on show to the public, and it shows a maturity and a willingness to share a part of the artist's self, which is why we're so glad to be a part of it.

We hope Evie continues with her amazing artistic ability.

...........In breaking news.... Our very first exhibition was Donna E Elmore's watercolour series back in December and now for sale at Arthur Gallery in Mair Street. We discovered that Donna's art is selling really well with the help of the very capable and cool Emma Barrance and her super cool assistants - Maria and Katie.

Things like this happen all the time, I meet the coolest, nicest, loveliest, most appreciative people every day.

Today Emily and Shaun came to the shop to visit with their lovely mum, Steph, and to show me their passport photos, in preparation for their trip to London and Ireland to meet their GREAT-grandparents (Steph and the kids are also my neighbours), but neither of us knew we where reading each others blog until Steph popped into the shop recently and the penny dropped!!!!!!

Another sweety I met recently, called in to take a look at the current exhibiition by Kirrilee Bailey, mates through LOMO. Andrew is an award winning photographer, working in our lucky City and when he discovered I was a little behind with the program, and did'nt have a proper mailing list, he set off to print out some pages for me, and got the ball rolling. BLUE MONDAY

The weekend kicked off with a big night on Friday, celebrating Kirrilee Baileys Art Photography Exhibition, supported by a crowd of around 50! The postcard series of 3, a limited edition set, is a brilliant and affordable idea and a great way of promoting Kirri's art. Original framed prints, wearable decorated undies and postcards are all available for sale now (postcards are selling fast!)

Saturday saw us working on a huge project after we closed the shop, which has included renovating and re-designing the interior of a 1960's house. We refer to it as 'The Howard Arkley Project' as its nestled amongst white chain fences, garden swans, tidy edged lawns, and directly opposite is an all-white house with a concrete front yard, white concrete lions and dozens of garden gnomes, all smiling back at us.

The biggest job so far has been preping the hardwood floors for painting, and we're very happy with the outcome. We used a heavy duty paving paint in 'Steel Charcoal', which has a hi gloss.

Anzac Day Sunday was party day for the family, but firstly the morning included a second coat of floor paint, then racing to the birthday lunch for Bridget, David, Toi, George, Cindy, Brian and Ziggy.

bbq'd fish with chili dipping sauce, lamb, thai salads, roast vegies and for sweets-quince tart, berry flombe, chocolate mousse, meringues, and other delicious assortments-all made by Jan, George and Cindy, where gratefully gobbled up, which then called for a walk to the Lake, all I could manage was a lie down!

Back to the reno project on Monday-almost completed, then on to the next one!

I noticed a blue-grey theme running through the latest pics- grandma's tablecloth and coffee mugs, Kevin standing on the rug, blue sky, my cardi, Toi's blue-grey top, Davids blue eyes, Saabarella, Sofa, steel blue/charcoal colour of painted floor, hope you like them! x

"Femininity and Perceptions of Trust" - an exhibition by Kirrilee Bailey

I've been fortunate enough to meet amazingly talented young artists in the past 4 months, and this forthcoming event is no exception.
Many will know Kirri through her blog kirri-joy which I've just learned was featured as one of Ballarat's top 10 leading blogs, as quoted by an ABC radio dude!

Kirrilee has many talents, she's a natural in front of the camera, and her love and knowledge of LOMO photography, plus Art, Graphic Design, Uni life, her friends and Ballarat as her home-among other things-are something this girl knows how to embrace!

Kirri tells me the main focus of this work is " femininity and perceptions of trust"

The exhibition will include large photographic prints, a small selection of "Costume Undies" and photography postcards.

Start: Friday 23rd April, for the next 4 weeks. Hope to see you soon.......

Currently for sale at Dear Prudence are a selection of Oil and pastel paintings by Susie Sabien, who is undertaking her Masters in Visual Arts at the University of Ballarat this year.

This retro themed assortment of cool and kitschy art is making itself right at home in the shop, and would look great amoungst mid-century through to contemporary settings.

Susie has been a regular at Dear Prudence since we opened, and we are very proud to have her work available for purchase.

One of my favourite paintings by Susie, is the kitschy retro orange salt and pepper shakers, a la still life.

We're sorting through sketches and drawings for the comic strip section of the mag. We love this character - Ophelia, drawn in pencil pastels, giving the picture a softer look. Its a vintage themed storyline, more to follow.......

We're hoping to find some extra writers who are interested in writing articles containing such themes as art, craft, vintage and retro design and history of buildings in and around Ballarat.

Look out for the $20 wall, which proves you can afford cool original art, such as the works of 'Trike" plus loads more.

Emma has been invaluable with her knowledge and advice regarding gallery stuff, plus she is very cool and she loves Ben, who is a sweety and does amazing art stuff, so does his brother Simon! Can't wait to get to their exhibition on the 1st of June.

I'm taking them out of the freezer, and soon we'll have guitars, records, piano accordians, harmonicas, tambourines, marrakkas, a sitar, bongoes, old sheet music and other such stuff.

Time has flown by at such an alarming rate, I've just realised that Dear Prudence is almost 4 months old!

Still very much in its early stages, but still going!

It would'nt have been possible without the overwhelming support I've had, the best customers, of all ages shapes and sizes.

I have an 80 something year old regular darling customer, who only buys 'red' and I can see myself in another 40 years, chasing that elusive red thing that I have'nt yet collected

I've had a very gentlemanly chap in his 90's, buying a set of cocktail glasses and a cravat to add to the collection

I've had a 12 day old bubba, who I first met just before she was born!

Miss Pepper ALWAYS has a smile for me, and her gorgeous sister Maya has already started preps!

Last week a young lady came in and bought THE RED SHOES that just did'nt fit anyone.

As she was leaving, she told me her dad had died that morning, and the shoes made her feel happy.....

and the best thing for me is the people who are'nt afraid to tell me how much they love the shop-warts and all!

Oh yeah, and the exhibition openings are becoming something I look forward to more and more, Chloe-bear is up next-look out!

I like how individuals show a creative side to them in different ways-on a wall (probs not their own!!) or a piece of someones garden.
Since I've been walking more, I've been able to notice more-I'm not having to watch out for 'crazy' Ballarat drivers, whose indicators never seem to work, and I'm sure some think that the word 'merge' is what big corporate businesses and banks do.
I do like to keep a look-out for those drivers who asume that if you're a pedestrian, you are well and truly mental, and need to be ushered on at a GIVE WAY street by a theatrical Queen- like waving of the hand, only to be blasted by the horn of the driver behind them, to 'get the hell out of the way-I'm in a hurry to get to the next set of red lights'!

TALLULAH BYRNE Exhibition Excitement!-"THE NOTEBOOK SERIES"

Some insights into thoughts and personal experiences have made up this "Notebook Series" exhibition now showing by Tallulah Byrne.

Anne and Terry spoke with obvious fondness of their daughter, and anicdotal evidence suggests Tallulah has enjoyed art from an early age

Its always a good feeling to see red dots on new art. Tallulah had a big turnout at her Opening Night, Her family and friends, along with some new faces made up some 40 odd guests. I've enjoyed every opening night so much, and met so many new people, who come out to support the artists and are finding their way back to Dear Prudence, and are becoming familiar faces. I'm glad to see them coming back!

Check out the photographic brilliance that won Tallulah the Ballarat High School Art Award for Photography 2009.

It features some stunning Ballarat landmarks, with Audrey and Galen portraying a story of lost love, captured beautifully and hauntingly by Tallulah's photography

The exhibition continues for 4 weeks, with artworks for sale, all proceeds going back to the artist.

Tallulah will be showcasing her talents this Friday 19th Feb with the Opening of her Art Photographic Exhibition at Dear Prudence 434 Sturt Street Ballarat

Tallulah may not be playing the violin and doing the hula-hoop, but she will be showing some pretty amazing pieces of art!

Winner of the prestigeous Ballarat High School Photography Award for 2009, it will be a pleasure to host this evening, and we look forward to seeing the talents of this young woman!

I was standing beside myself with excitement yesterday when I came home and found the first BIG TOMATO from our harvest, sitting on top of my NEW old rocker picked up from a garage sale. Now I have somewhere comfy to sit, besides on my bed, and Oscar has a nice tomato sandwich for school oops I mean UNI lunch!

Last night was such a fun night, Camilla Nicholls Exhibition Opening went fabulously well, we packed in around 35 guests, who enjoyed themselves as much as we did!

Camilla's parents-Sandra and Richard-got behind the evening with a great spread of nibblies and a heartfelt speech by Camilla's proud dad. (and so he should be, this girl is GOLD!!)

A pleasure to have such a lovely family evening, plus the support of friends and family, and to top the night off, we got home just in time to catch 'Midsomer Murders"!!!!!

Today I visited the Ballarat Mill Market with my sister.

The Dear Prudence Stall is located next door to Tashi's 'MATMOS LOUNGE' which stocks gorgeous bags, purses, softies, and clothing- inspired by 60'S styles, and original 60's fabrics.

When Tashi has stocked her stall full, she will have available some of the same at Dear Prudence in Sturt Street.

Today, we took the bulk of the furniture to our new stall at the Ballarat Mill Market. We now have 2 places to sell our wares!
Kate and Richard where a great help as always THANKS mateys.

Suzie is a little rippa, and is the number 1 assistant at the shop. Corsetry is her passion, but Suzie can turn her hand to all sorts of creative stuff- and is booked for an exhibition later in the year, can't wait!

Tamara is our lovely hard-working alteration and repair woman, her rich Russian accent. a delight to the ears. Her new shop has opened in the Block Arcade and we are fortunate to have an amazingly talented person to refer customers to.

Another great asset to Dear Prudence is Nora, who lives and breathes vintage and retro, and is a true Irish beauty! Nora can be found on any given day at DP when she's not tracking down amazing finds for her stall at the Ballarat Mill Market or being a mum or working at her 'day job'

A new label coming our way next year is 'CASTOFF' by Lysette's mum. Lots of lovely knits and crochet bits-well worth waiting for!

We are so fortunate to have the support and friendship of these girls and boys and look forward to the year ahead!

When Miss Emma is'nt at her other job, she may well be at Dear Prudence, helping her old aunt! Watch out for more great Vintage Cocktail Rings making their way to the store in the new year.

Winner of the Ballarat High School Art award for 2009, and shortlisted for the Toparts at The National Gallery of Victoria (down from 3000 applicants to 200, so far!) its easy to see why

Donna's work is proving so popular. If shortlisted to the top 80, Donna's work will be exhibited at the NGV!

Recently, Kate and her daughters Pepper and Maya came to visit Dear Prudence. Maya tried on a few outfits-she looked fabulous! Pepper was content to roll around on the floor, under the watchful eye of Emma and Donna, while mum snapped some gorgeous pics of Dear Prudence lovelyness, plus some very nice modelling by Miss Maya.
They have been a very busy little family, as you can check out on their blog, and we're looking forward to their next visit!

Thanks to Kate, at Foxs Lane, for the theme of collections. I've decided to join in with this one, for my first go!
I've had a look at quite a few, I enjoyed Land of Meg's great Red Collection, and was reminded of all things red that fill my house, and the amazing collection of sewing machines from Marian.
I thought about my bookcase collection (to house the book collection) and my tassle collection, dolls house collection, card collection, box collection, striped socks collection, pencil collection, in fact I like to collect all sorts of stuff.

I've gone for a practical collection........My shopping bags. I suppose I do collect them, and borrow them from friends and family, and I loan them out and mostly get them back.

"Most Used Shopping Bag Award" goes to this, for the sheer volume of stuff that can be fitted in, and the fact that it can be flung over the shoulder.

I don't mind a string shopping bag at all, and the green one is ideal for fruit and veg.

Some I made myself, some where made by friends, some gifts, others picked up at markets and in other towns, states and countries. (not necessarily by me!)

This is not really mine, but I do like to use it, its very sweet.

I love this shopping bag, it was made by a Ballarat girl a couple of years ago.

Saturday saw the puddle at our back door that actually lifted the wire mat and moved it along a little way...!!!!! yoinks, floody floody!!!!!

Under here lies our path, it was ankle deep!!!!!!

The Elderberry tree crept in through the kitchen window, I'm sure it grew overnight after the rain...................

Sunday was a different story, when I opened the shop I was greeted with a massive puddle that had been dripping through the roof all night and that morning, nothing for it but to rip up the sogging mess, and let the slab dry out.

Painting the floor will be the next challenge, but that means no more carpets to worry about getting rained upon!

The good people from EERIE TOURS swung in today to confirm the go-ahead for ticket sales at DEAR PRUDENCE! yay!

We, who have been on the tours, are well and truly equipped to promote this brilliant attraction, its a great way to see the city by night. We attended a wintry June Ghost tour, which added to the 'eeriness' and was thoroughly enjoyed by all 3 generations of our families who attended.
On the night of the Old Cemetery Tour, we where treated to a full moon, lightning strikes (far, far away, but very impressive) and a balmy evening, soaking up some amazing history and atmosphere.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - 5 Stars!!!!!

Tickets will be available for sale in a week or two.

Its time to think about what to wear to the chrissy party, end of year bash, big birthday, or just for the hell of it!
Steph is the new sewing goddess, she can repair, remove, lengthen, shorten, take in, take out, or completely re-style or create a brand new look for you.
Clients are already lined up waiting for fittings and re-fittings. Yesterday proved to be hugely successful, with quite a few fittings and design ideas.
Can't wait to see the end result for Tam's Bloomers, or the gorgeous pink ballerina tutu custom order! and Sofie has chosen a gorgeous 60's lace dress, to be redyed and restyled.

It All Started with a Jacket and a Watering-Can........

I finally began the shelf with of a selection of books for sale. From Winston Churchill, Enid Blyton and Chaucer, Robert L. Stevenson, Somerset Maughan, and a volume of Golden Hands for the crafty ones! Just to mention a few.

Last night I spent a lovely time mixing purple with orange and gold, and came up with a combination worthy of a mannequin (I have to be very choosy, as I only have the one, so far!)display.

I wonder if it will scare the customers? Maybe they'll like it as much as I do? I'll find out in half an hour when I get peddling on down to the shop......Steph will be in today Yay! Doily Girl has proven a blessed treasure, loved by everyone she meets, it does make for a fun day of "work"!!!!

WHY?

This morning I browsed through some old pics, and came across these. I was reminded of the phone call from the police in the middle of the night asking if my silver shiny car was missing. "No? its parked out the front of the house! is'nt it???"

Well, no it was'nt. It had been stolen and set fire to. One of my first thoughts was, "whoever did this, had to drive it through town in the dark with the hi beam jammed on (as I'd observed the last couple of times I'd driven at night) then I was reminded of all the other oddities that was "The Silver Seca". I had to stick my finger in the bit that once was the indicator switch if I wanted to show I was turning (it had snapped of a couple of years before) although, I'm sure whoever stole Silver obviously had no regard for law, therefore probable would'nt have used it! and the fuel opener thingy was also broken, luckily for the "robber" as the kids had described him/her, I'd filled the car with $50 of fuel that evening (and remember thinking, "I should have put $25 in, and spent $25 on bread milk and fruit for school lunches that week!")
As Brian drove me to Silvers last stand, I recall thinking "At least its only the car, and no-one was hurt"(although in all honesty, at the time I would'nt have cared too much if the "robber" had fallen down a ditch and sprained his/her ankle quite badly, whilst making a hasty getaway, and I would'nt be too bothered to learn that said ankle still gives them jip every now and then, especially on really hot days, when I don't much feel like riding the bike!
"Should have, could have, would have" Baaaahhhhhh, and yes I know the insurance should have been updated, and could have been if I'd had the means to do it at the time, and I would have, (if I could have!)
...But I did'nt!
On the bright side, 2 years on, I've become a happy cyclist, and I've since bought another car, which I lock.

The Doily label is as popular as I suspected! Felt hair accessories are being clipped and twisted into many a 'do, while the little softies are down to the last 3, thats after the last re-order!!!!!

...And don't get me started on the Foxy ones over at Foxs Lane, Steph's decorating skills where only to be admired for a couple of hours, then POOF! Tees and skirts started movin on out.

The chosen one......I'm delighted with the vintage frame, and the great job done by the good people of Accent Frames, when it came to mounting and framing a couple of BLUEBELLS pieces. Of course it all looks so fabulous as a result of BLUEBELLS sheer talent to capture a beautiful moment through her drawings, I LOVE her stuff, and so do the customers, when I tell them she's a Ballarat lassy, they come over all proud!

The Teapot with cup and saucers was another we had mounted, shows off BLUEBELLS work perfectly!

Every day so far, an admirer has gazed longingly at these little beauties, but alas, so far, they just have'nt fitted anyone! its not that they are'nt comfy, and they certainly are a fine vintage, the heel is much admired (not too hi) the colour is the kind of red you imagine when longing for a crunchy, juicy shiny red apple, but Cinderella has'nt appeared yet..........maybe it's Dorothy I should be looking out for?!!

I've been missing my family and pets, so yesterday afternoon I spent in the garden, Prudence was confined to the chook pen for eating the baby broccolis , all the vegies are going wild, and I'm very happy with how the chalkboard turned out behind Miss Z's door.
